Website design FAQ

Today, there are millions of websites all varying in size, style and content. Determining what sort of site you need for yourself whether you have a business, a club or an organisation can be a daunting thought.

Gaining a web presence

You may simply be looking to develop a point of contact on the internet - a place where potential customers may visit to find out what you do, how to contact you and where you are. This probably doesn't require much more than a handful of pages and an email address. This doesn't mean your site has to look unprofessional, just that the content is informative, relevant and compact.

Displaying your products online

If you have a range of products that you would like to make available to the public, putting them online can be a cost effective way of doing so. This way, potential buyers can view your products at the touch of a button. This may also be a good alternative to having a brochure or catalogue printed, particularly if your products change regularly - it's far cheaper than having a reprint!

Your domain name

In order for people to locate your website, like your premises, it needs to have an address, or URL (Uniform Resource Locator). For example, http://www.bbc.co.uk is an URL that will take you to the BBC's homepage. Your address can be purchased (if you don't already have one) for just a few pounds these days.

Your email address

When you buy a domain name, it can be the address for your email also. For example, the address www.gregorygray.co.uk enables you to have the email address bob@gregorygray.co.uk or bob.smith@gregorygray.co.uk - its up to you to decide on the email address you would like (the shorter the better we say).

Your website content

When it comes to describing what you do or sell, the best person to tell the public about it is you. So when it comes to generating content for your new website, you're the best people to do it, not because we're being lazy - because nobody knows your business like you do. Making sure that the words that feature upon your web pages is far more important than many people realise too!

Optimising your website

Words are key to the success of your website. The content of each page, whether they display products, tell people about yourselves, your club, school or organisation, is what will generate 'hits' from search engines. Making the content of your website rich will do more to deliver potential viewers to your website than software or many of the other methods available. So it really is worth putting in extra effort when you are collecting the content for your website.

Production of your website

As your site is put together, we will send you a link you can visit via email that will display your site. Your site can 'live' here until it is ready for the public to see. As the website grows, we can upload it and forward an email link to it so that you can monitor its progress. This way, you have greater control over how the site is presented in its finished state. Once the site is complete, it can be uploaded into its own webspace and then viewed by the public. However, it is worth pointing out, that the process of climbing the search engine ranks can be a lengthy one.
